K-12 Tuition Free Public School

Accreditation

Q: Is SCVi accredited through WASC?

A: SCVi is a candidate school for accreditation through the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). This is the first step toward achieving full WASC accreditation for our entire K-12 program. Candidacy shows that SCVi has "provided evidence of sound planning, resources to implement these plans, and appears to have the potential for attaining its goals within a reasonable time."

Accreditation is a multi-year process consisting of two stages. The first stage, an initial visit by a WASC accreditation team, was completed in the fall of 2010. In early 2011, we received notification that we had been granted "candidacy" status, which means our program is fully recognized by WASC. As part of the approval process, the candidate school must attend 3 trainings over a period of 18 months. We completed our first two trainings in November 2011 and March 2012 and will attend our final training in fall 2012 at which time our comprehensive 3 day final visit can be arranged. This visit is expected to take place in Fall 2013.

Q: Are SCVi courses a-g approved?

A: A-g refers to the high school courses required for entrance to the University of California and the California State University systems. New schools submit their courses to for approval when the first graduating class is in the 10th or 11th grade.  Beginning fall 2012 our 9th through 12th grade courses will be a-g approved.

Q: What does IB Candidate School mean and where is SCVi in the candidacy process?

A: SCVi is the first school in Santa Clarita Valley to seek IB authorization.  IB seeks to provide students with the preparation to become active, thoughtful, knowledgeable global citizens.  The curriculum is engaging and rich, allowing for students to deeply explore and apply concepts.  Similar to WASC authorization, becoming an authorized World IB School is a multi-year process.

SCVi submitted the application for authorization for the Diploma Program, including all course outlines on April 1, 2012. Our application is being examined and assessed during the spring and summer 2012.  A full authorization visit will be conducted in fall, 2012 and SCVi will receive the recommendation from IB in spring, 2013.
